';The oil was never put back'; ?

Unless you had an oil change when the water pump was replaced, the oil level would not be a related issue. My 1996 maxima recently had a water pump replaced. A few weeks later the engine went, oil was never replaced ?
LeAnne is right - there's no reason the oil would have been drained to change the water pump. Also - if you had no oil, your engine would not have lasted a few weeks, it would have died much sooner. And - if there was no oil, wasn't the oil pressure light on?

There clearly is much more to this situation that what you've told us.
