How many oil changes are oil drain plug washers good for?

One.

Those are ';crush washers'; - they are made to seal by deforming. It is possible to crank down on them more and get them to deform some more, but some oil pans - notably Hondas - are already susceptible to the threads stripping even when the bolt is torqued with a torque wrench. Those pans are expensive. Been there, done that, have the T-shirt.

If you want a reusable washer, you can get silicone washers at auto parts stores. They don't last forever but work pretty well. How many oil changes are oil drain plug washers good for?
According to most car manufacturers, ONE!

I have been reading about repairing a leaking oil pan drain plug with teflon tape.?

My question is how much and where. I figured about 5-6 wraps right after the plug washer but not the whole length of the plug, correct?

Also, another answer explained about a water hose washer, use it between the pan and the drain pan washer?I have been reading about repairing a leaking oil pan drain plug with teflon tape.?
if the plug is stripped out (keeps turning never get tight enough) then new plug kit. If the hole in the oil pan is stripped new oil pan. Now if it just leaks even when tight you could just wrap the threads in teflon tape from the plug washer to the end of the threads. There may have been a small rubber gasket on the plug that feel off or rotted away. Cheap fix would be to get a small piece of cork gasket material and cut it out to the shape and size of the washer. This would be installed between the oil pan and the washer.

All I would say is try it and see whats works for you.I have been reading about repairing a leaking oil pan drain plug with teflon tape.?
Teflon tape might work but not for long. It is the gasket between the bolt head and pan that seals the drain. You can buy just that gasket at an auto parts store. If your drain plug is stripped out, you can get an oversized plug and it will tap new threads for itself as you screw it in.
uh, a new bolt WITH gasket is only a few bucks. fix it right the first time. you can spend more on the teflon tape that the oil is gonna break it down in 3000 miles anyways and leak all over again.
just replace the washer and make shure the threads are good.

if they are not you can get a self taping plug from napa
if the threads aren't stripped buy a new factory plug and gasket

    Great link Errica.

    Nice pics.
should be on the bottom of your crank case.
Look for a tube (rubber) under the crankcase, I think on that year it was right behind the exhaust mount, look for a tube that goes into this. There will be a worm gear clamp holding it on.

edit: Go with the link below from errica - not sure why they would have you take the filter off first as it creates more of a mess but GREAT PICTURES!

Your car is one of the few that you can reach it without ramps. Never use jacks because people have been killed when the jack collapsed. Jackstands are ok but still not as safe as not raising the car.

It is under the car, towards the left side (left when sitting in the driver's seat looking ahead). Lie down and place your head next to the front tires, a bit more forward. The drain plug is facing the back of the car. It is silver. It is at the edge of the sump, which is a silver solid piece of metal about the size of a shoebox. Remember to get a new gasket for the plug. You can reuse the gasket if you don't overtighten the drain plug

Remember to open the hood before you start working. Once in a while, the hood gets stuck and doesn't open. If you drain the oil and this happens to you, you are screwed. Open the hood (bonnet) before starting anything. In fact, loosen the oil filler cap to allow air to go in so the oil drains a bit faster.Where is the engine oil drain plug on a 1992 Saab Turbo?

  • How often should the oil drain plug be replaced when doing oil changes?

Every 10 years or As needed.

Generally speaking, as needed, if your plug is still functional then there is no need to replace it. Junk yards are excellent places to find cheap replacements for your plug or eBay is even better. How often should the oil drain plug be replaced when doing oil changes?
Never. You might need a new gasket from time to time, but the drain plug should last the life of the car. It often gets torn up by people not using the proper tools, and once it gets bad enough, you might be able to remove it with vise grips only. If it gets that bad or some one cross threads it putting it in wrong, it should be replaced. How often should the oil drain plug be replaced when doing oil changes?
If care has been taken, it should never need replacing. If the plug or hole is stripped, then you need a self-threading replacement slightly larger. If the washer is deformed, you replace it. The last plug I replaced, the ONLY plug I ever replaced, was in 1967. I have never needed to replace a washer.
Never, only if it becomes damaged, it should outlast the life of the car if you use the correct tools and tension.
I would not change it unless it is causing you a leak.

Most likely there will be a drain line that hangs off the oil tank ,there will be a plug clamped in the end of the line.

On some models, there will be a T connector in the oil line ,with a plug in it, these are most often under the bike ,near the kick stand,

Check the tank first, then down by the kick stand, look for an oil line with a plug in the end.

thanksWhere is the oil drain plug for a husqvarna 6522sh ?
Drain plug on a push mower is generally under the mower deck. Turn it on its side and you should see it. You may need to scrape some of the grass off to find it, if your mower looks like mine. Hope this helps.Where is the oil drain plug for a husqvarna 6522sh ?
Woodtick is right, But don't tip the mower over, Tip it on it's side. Make sure the air cleaner is in the ';UP'; position when you have the tipped on it's side.

If you tip the mower with the air cleaner down, you'll get crank case oil into the air cleaner and ruin it.
you can drain it out off the dipstick tube the same place you would add oil.there is a plug in the bottom of the engine where you can drain the oil.but sometimes they are covered or blocked by covers.just take out the oil stick and tilt it over.hope this helps.
Believe it or not, most push mowers do not have drain plugs. You need to empty out the gas and tip the mower to drain it.

How do you rethread a oil pan drain plug hole? what tools do i need and what do they do? what is meant by tap?

and how does it work? Thanks for any help. im not actually doing one right now so i dont need info on a specific vehicle but i would really like to know how.How do you rethread a oil pan drain plug hole? what tools do i need and what do they do? what is meant by tap?
Go to your local auto parts store and tell them what vehicle you have and the size of engine. They will sell you an oversized drain plug that is self-taping. All you need is a wrench large enough to put the plug in.How do you rethread a oil pan drain plug hole? what tools do i need and what do they do? what is meant by tap?
A tap is the tool that cuts the threads in a drilled hole so as to put a screw or bolt. There are starting taps, bottom taps,

cleaning taps. You need a tap to clean the bad threads.

A large tap for a oil pan may run big bucks, so the best way for that is to bring the drain plug to an auto store and have them match the tap needed and rent it.
There are replacement plugs that self tap. But, if you had to tap one yourself you would first drill the hole to the next biggest size and then tap with the next biggest tap. There are also rubber plugs that you push in and then tighten with a wing nut on the end. The rubber expands and seals. A tap is a tool that cuts new threads.
Some vehicles like some Fords, have fine threads, which are easy to strip or crossthread..You can buy self-tapping plugs that are just a bit larger, but you need to exercise careful caution.O'Reillys or Auto Zone will fix you up.

Oil drain plug on my Ninja is stripped. What can I do?

A friend of mine recently changed the oil in my Ninja ZX-6 and the next morning I noticed a very slow leak. I went to tighten the oil drain plug and after it got just a little tight, it started to get loose again. I'm almost sure it's stripped and it's still leaking a little. I took it to the local bike shop and he said best case scenario it's going to be 150-200 bucks to fix and worst case much more. Is there an easy way to fix this problem?Oil drain plug on my Ninja is stripped. What can I do?
Get a tap and re-thread it to the next larger U.S. fine thread bolt.

    Use a heli coil.

Use the drain plugs that self thread for the situation you are in.

Be sure to use a nylon or soft metal crunch washer and **do not over tighten or cross thread again!**Oil drain plug on my Ninja is stripped. What can I do?
Sure Drain Oil Plug - http://www.cablecar.biz/straightbladeplugs/suredrainoilplug.html Report Abuse

u could try to retap the hole. if this works, problem solved. if the original size cant be maintained, u might need to go to the next size larger, run the tap, and use something that will be able to be used as an oil plug.
Why the hell do you have a friend change your oil? If you ride, you should at least know the basics of maintaining your bike. Get yourself a tap set %26amp; redo the drain hole yourself. Almost all the above answers were right on the money. You'd be crazy to pay hundreds of dollars to do this repair!
they do make a kit it is made by heli coil you will have to drill the hole out and put the heli coil in and then the new bolt for the heli coil. i know that your bolt is metric but that will not make a diff. A good auto part store can fix you up and it is the easiest fix i can think of and will work good as new. hope this helps
Most auto part stores sell self tapping over sized drain plugs. Buy one and follow the directions.

I used one on my Ninja 500 and it worked great.

    Hope this helps
yes if it is leaking re thread the hole and get a little bigger plug this should cost alot less than 50 dollars compared to your local mechanic
i would go with what has been previously said. it's the easiest way to save 200 bucks that is at the most worth the price of the tap and a bolt to be used for an oil plug, and that still wouldnt come to 200 dollars. ya know, u would save even more cash if u would splurge on getting a service manual for this bike. maybe mr. murphy wouldnt pay u another visit.
    Have a Helicoil installed.
I think you have a separate sump plate which can be removed. You will have to take exhaust system off first. It should then be possible to either Helicoil sump or fit a new/used one with good threads.

You could also try Autozone/Pep-Boys or similar for oversize sump plugs, probably Honda civic or Toyota or similar ( Get a metric one)
They have self threading plugs on the market.

Hello All, Oil drain plug on C'man compressor will not budge. Almost stripped it but not quite. What to do?

Old model 919.174320, 2HP,20 gal capacity. Trying to bring it back to life. Don't want to have to pay for maintenance before I've tried it on my own. I'm a widow trying to use late husband's tools!!Hello All, Oil drain plug on C'man compressor will not budge. Almost stripped it but not quite. What to do?
Isn't the oil plug on this compressor a square headed lug? If yes, you should be able to shamelessly grab that thing with large, ';channel-lock'; waterpump pliers, or even a pipe wrench.

But, before you get tough with it, do give the liquid wrench a try. If you're comfortable with this, you may also try applying some heat. Don't go crazy with an Oxy-Acetylene torch, but a heat gun or a Bernzatmatic torch (see link, but I'll bet your husband had one of these too. You can get one at any hardware store) will get results. Just be careful, you might want to do this outdoors just to be safe.

Also, don't forget to drain the tank periodically, once you get it working as condensation inside the tank can cause it to rust out. The tank drain valve is a pain and because it gets wet, they tend to rust and stick too. Put some oil on that and turn it periodically.

That's a nice compressor, you should get a lot of use from it.Hello All, Oil drain plug on C'man compressor will not budge. Almost stripped it but not quite. What to do?
OK AA if you don't have liquid wrench, use BP Blaster, WD 40 etc. follow instructions. You can try putting the wrench on the plug and tapping the wrench with a mallot or hammer to break the plug loose. A non metal hammer is much safer. Make sure you hold the wrench so it don't fly off. Don't mash your fingers, wear gloves and safety glasses and anything else you need. You might have to be persistent but it will come out.
Try putting some liquid wrench on it,let it sit on there for 15 minutes or so.When you do try to loosen it again make sure you have a wrench that fits snuggly on the bolt.Try to tighten it first sometimes this will work, then loosen it.righty tighty, lefty loosy

My oil drain plug on my car is froze and rounded ?

My oil drain plug is froze and rounded and it won't budge, I tried a pair of vice grips and only rounded the head more. I have a pipe wrench I was going to try that. Should I heat up the bolt first? It is on a 1993 ford escort, and there is not enough room to put a socket on it. Any suggestions? Thank you..My oil drain plug on my car is froze and rounded ?
you can heat it a little but to help it but a good pipe wrench will remove it,i get a hold of a few once in a while that's rounded off and usually the pipe wrench is the last resort to get those off,but it works, good luck.My oil drain plug on my car is froze and rounded ?
    your welcome. Report Abuse

Don't heat the bolt! It will expand and make the problem worse. If there's no room for a socket, the only other thing I can think of is a cold chisel. Whack the bolt with the cold chisel and the biggest hammer you can wield in the space available. Whack it at an angle, in the right direction to undo it. Eventually you will make a notch which will mean you can whack it harder. Hopefully you have space to make a few notches, which could mean you might again have enough grip to use a wrench. Brutal, but it usually works.
have someone weld a flat piece of metal to that drain plug and then you can put vice grips on the metal shank and turn the drain plug counter clock wise. after you do that get a new drain plug. there is tools at the car parts store that can also get that drain plug off, but i like doing it my way. i wish you well on this problem.
I wouldn't heat it. If the car has been warmed up then that should have the same effect without the possible problems of having a torch applied to the oil pan. The vice grips you used may not have been big enough to put enough grip on the drain plug. I would try using a larger vice grip to get the plug out and definitely replace it.
Can you use a flat file on the bolt faces and restore the sharp corners? Then try fitting the next smaller size socket (either metric or inch size, which ever fits the bolt.)

Be sure to use a 6-point socket -- a 12-point socket has too many angles and will only round off the plug head again.
The pipe wrench should do the trick. Just be sure that you are trying to turn the plug in the right direction.

use a file to square up the edges of the drain plug and then use a 6 point boxed end wrench to loosen it.

torque spec on a 2001 ACCURA?I was wondering if the oil drain plug washer needs to be replace after each oil change and if there is a?
The torque specs on drain nuts are the max torque you can apply to them without thread damage, its purpose is to keep out oil, its not a stressed bolt, and just need to be snug, you shoudlt even tighten it up to the torque spec you will likely damage the threads if you do it enough.

You dont need to replace the washer, unless its leaking, you can sue the same one over and over, untill it gets too squished and wont seal anymore.I was wondering if the oil drain plug washer needs to be replace after each oil change and if there is a?
For torque specs call the dealer, ask the counterman at the auto parts store, or even better, get a repair manual. Chilton or Haynes. Other wise, just tighten it just a bit. On the washer, did it ever leak? If so, then get a nylon or fiber replacement from the store. These may also be copper. But if it never leaked then keep reusing it.
no, only new washer or plug if its damaged . torque spec, ? just snug enough to stay in, DONT tighten to much, or you risk stripping the oil pan. 45 years of driving, and i always change my own oil, never had a problem except on a car that was taken to a shop and a jockey over tightened the plug and filter
it all depends on what type of washer it is.......i have found using a copper washer is best then followed by the nylon washers and lastly the felt washers, which in my opinionre just cr#p.

as for the torque, shouldn't need a torque wrench, just do up tight.

and if starts to strip, well thats too tight.
Yes, it is a good practice to replace the washer each time.

Only spec I saw on an Acura engine was 33ft/lbs on the drain plug. but I'd ask the dealer, myself.
It's 29 foot pounds for the Accura. A little less than the 33 other Hondas use. There's no need whatsoever to replace the washer.
No need at all to replace this unless of course if it's leaking.

Just make sure if your changing your oil yourself to not over tighten the plug.
    nope, only if leaking

  • Is it normal to see some oil on the oil drain plug after an oil change or should it be completely dry of oil?

When I looked at the oil drain plug the first time it looked like it had some oil on it (maybe some oil is seeping out?). So I dried it with a paper towel and it was dry. When I came back a few minutes later to check it the oil drain plug looked like it had some oil on it again. Is it normal to have some oil around the oil drain plug so I can tell if I need to tighten it more?Is it normal to see some oil on the oil drain plug after an oil change or should it be completely dry of oil?
No, i would take it back to where you got it changed, it could be possible it was cleaned poorly, if you have a 17mm wrench make sure it is snugged. But being a 95 it could be possible its already has leaks such as pan gasket or some sort of trans leak.it would not be uncommon on an older vehicle. They also have aluminum crush washers that are suppose to be replaced ,not reused. Is it normal to see some oil on the oil drain plug after an oil change or should it be completely dry of oil?
    no, that is not normal.

There should be a fiber like gasket or metal sealing washer on the plug to prevent this. They do wear out. You should be able to get a new plug or gasket from the local auto parts store.

If you snugged it down good, I'd leave it, be sure not to over-tighten it, that will be many more dollars to fix.

How to change the oil on if the oil drain plug is welded?

well my friend sorry to say but you WILL need to replace your pan and get a new plug because that baby is not gonna come out without breaking the oil pan. also gonna have to buy a new gasket too.How to change the oil on if the oil drain plug is welded?
huh a welded plug. some idiot must not have known which way to turn to loosen or didn't know when to stop turning to tighten. the best bet is a new or salvage yard pan. try cherryauto.com for good parts. How to change the oil on if the oil drain plug is welded?
    Simple solution.

Go to Pep Boys, or JC Whitney and buy an oil change kit that has a vacuum pump. You place the plastic tube into the dipstick tube and it pumps out the oil.
they make a marine pump. you can get it at a lot of places, you can can get one than plugs in to 12v. 110v, or hookes to the end of a drill. the hose goes done through the oil dipstick tube. you suck out the ould oil as best you can, these are used on boats where you cannot get to the drain plug. it doesnt sound very effecient, but thats what we have to do with my friends boat. some can be found at walmart, and also through j.c. whitney.
    I SERIOUSLY doubt it's welded.

It may just be realy tight.

Try to loosen it again. Counter clockwise.
Forget the pumps... You can't the sludge out that way. That crap sits in the bottom of the pan. And you never know if theose is in the lowest part of the pan. Might not get it all. Cheap crap that doesn't do it. You really need to get the pan replaced or fixed. It is the best way.
    Why is the plug welded!

You will need to drop the oil pan to change the oil.

While it鈥檚 down, have the oil plug port repaired properly so the plug is usable again.

    That鈥檚 just wrong!
You have a couple options: The best thing for you to do is get a new oil pan with a drain plug and new gasket. The other thing to do is drop the oil pan and replace the oil pan gasket whenever you change your oil. The only other option you may have is some garages have an oil plug kit where they can retap a hole in your oil pan. My friend has one at his garage and I watched him do it. Hope this helps.
ya don't even think about sucking it out that's the fix the last guy had and that was doing it half a???? do it wright replace oil pan or get somebody to fix the threads depends on how much it is welded on maters on that too
the drain plug is welded??????........WTF????......you are about to embark on an expensive journey of getting the oilpan replaced.........which is what should have been done when the stripped threads, the weld cured, was discovered!!!!
They make a pump that goes in where your oil stick is that will pump the old oil out! Good Luck!
Ignore all the nay sayers that insist you must change to oil pan. http://www.autosportcatalog.com/index.cf鈥?/a> is the answer. If that is too much for you to spend, http://www.wholesalemarine.com/c/410011/鈥?/a> will give you some cheaper alternatives.
Not sure on that one, about the only thing you could do is replace the oil pan,if it's welded then something must be wrong with it to have to weld it in the first place..

i see plenty of nuts and bolts, but i'm not sure which one it is?

(No ridiculous answers please)Wher is the oil drain plug located on a 1988 chrysler new yorker?
Being a 1988 model, I assume you have the 3.0L engine. Than one should have the drain plug on the rear of the engine pan towards the right side. It should be 17mm hex, unless it has been replaced along the way.

If a 2.2L, it should be in the middle of the pan on the rear also. It isn't metric and most require a 5/8 wrench.

All will be on the rear of the engine oil pan and angled downward, not straight down like the other bolts you see. It may also have a fiber or plastic washer under it.

The oil pan is a large piece of stamped steel (usually) directly under the engine.Wher is the oil drain plug located on a 1988 chrysler new yorker?
It's at the bottom of the oil pan, which is a large pan at the bottom of the engine.

It should be a single bolt at the bottom of the oil pan, if there are other bolts right next to it, it is not the right bolt.

To avoid confusion, when I refer to front, I mean towards the radiator, and back means towards the rear of the vehicle.

4 Cylinder, it should be in the middle of the pan towards the back, at a downward angle.

6 cylinder engines should have the bolt in the middle of the pan, but at the front side of the pan (not on the bottom, but on the side at the bottom).
On the rear facing surface of the oil pan. It should be facing slightly downward and at the rear of the engine.
look for the oil pan, under the motor, probably sorta round at the edges but flat at the bottom......... there will be a pretty large bolt there that you have to unscrew. watch out for the oil........

  • Is there a real benefit (or possible harm) in using a magnetic oil drain plug?

I just came across magnetic oil drain plugs on the Internet and would like to know more about them.Is there a real benefit (or possible harm) in using a magnetic oil drain plug?
I recommend magnetic plugs to everyone. Even under normal conditiond, engines do naturally produce metal by-products from wear and tear. A magnetic plug grabs these metal particles and holds them so they do not get circulated back through the engine. They do no harm while being held on a piece of magnet in your oil pan while they can do gobs of harm going through the system.

********Before there were a such thing as magnetic oil plug, mechanics had another way of accomplishing this. Most oil pans also used to be made of metal. Long time ago, I used to keep a bunch of small magnets around my shop. On my regular customer's vehicles, when I changed their oil, I'd stick a magnet somewhere out of the way near the bottom of there oil pan. It done basically the same thing as the magnetic oil plugs. The oil plugs work better though because it puts the magnetic INSIDE the oil pan in a way that it can't move anywhere. Because of road bumps, the ones I used to stick to the pan would sometimes fall off.Is there a real benefit (or possible harm) in using a magnetic oil drain plug?
It wont hurt anything, they're great, cause after you un screw it,it sticks so it dont fall in the oil pan,you un stick it and it's alot cleaner, for your hands,i fucin hate when it falls in the pan, then ya gotta fish it out of hot oil.
so what did the Internet say? If you change your own oil there's a possible benefit to having them. If you check for chips every time you take the plug out, and you find a lot of metal chips what is it going to tell you?
engines do come apart a little at a time as we drive the magnetic plug keeps the particles from going back through the motor many vehicles have them from the factory
There is no harm in using a magnetic drain plug. The theory is that if any metal fragments fall into the oil pan, then the plug will attract them.
I'd say they are good to have as they collect any wear and tear metal from the Oil... and thus helps the Filter that ';little'; much more...
there great as they will take out small metal particles floating in the oil, won't hurt your car one bit.
    No harm but maybe good.

Your filters do an adequate job.

I always change it everytime i change the oil in anything, i just got a set of ramps so this is my first time being able to change the oil.

ThanksI have a 2001 ford mustang GT, what size oil drain plug gasket does it take?
You need a 5/8'; or 16mm wrench for the drain plug. You DO NOT need to replace or install a drain plug gasket. This particular engine uses a drain plug that already has a rubber o-ring on it that serves the purpose of a gasket. Installing another gasket on it will cause it to leak. The engine oil filter is located at the driver side front of the engine. The engine oil filter you need is an FL-820S oil filter from Ford. The engine takes about 6.0 to 6.5 litres of 5W20 engine oil. Hope that gives you enough information.I have a 2001 ford mustang GT, what size oil drain plug gasket does it take?

yes it does buy new drainplug it will have a new gasket on it just to be sureIs a 99 GMC Sierra supposed to have an oil drain plug gasket?
Every car I've owned has a gasket.

Some GM cars have a brass gasket, looks like a plumbing washer, almost like a ring you could put on your finger.

Some GM cars have the same gasket except made of rubber.

I've known GM dealers that will give you 1 or 2 for free as goodwill when you go to the parts department.

If you don't screw it in too tight, you can sometimes use the rubber ones twice. Maybe even 3 or more times, but I never chance it that much.

Why not change the oil and put in a new gasket when doing so. Do not try to just overtighten it. There have been cases where the oil pan develops cracks from overtightening. It also makes taking it off difficult.
    Some do some don't.

Some have brass, some have nylon.
You need an oil drain plug gasket.

How to find an oil drain plug size.?

13mm or 15mm everytime. How to find an oil drain plug size.?
drain plugs are typically in mm. most are between the range 14-17mm. just get a socket kit and try until it works. I am speaking for foreign made cars though. since yours is domestic, they might be using English units.
My 1998 Grand Prix has a 15mm head.
    Try your metric crescent wrench.

The drain plug is located on the back of the motor about half way up from the cavitation plate. There you will see a rubber plug.Inside this plug is where the bolt is located. The size is either 13 or 15mm, I cannot remember which one.I hope this helps.Where is the engine oil drain plug on a 2003, 4 stroke, 90 hp honda outboard motor?
If you are mechanically inclined and want to perform other maintenance yourself, you should purchase a repair manual. You will save the cost of the manual many times over the life of the engine. Here's a link to buy one.

Do i need to change oil drain plug , while changing oil ?Do I need to change ';oil drain plug'; while changing oil ?
No, And when you put it back on just get tight but not so tight only a gorilla can get it off. Remember you have to get it off and the oil pan is not that strong.

Some have a copper washer so take note when you take it off. You can use the washer if it has one over too. Unless it's leaking.Do I need to change ';oil drain plug'; while changing oil ?
If it's not damaged, I couldn't see why you would have to change the plug.

Several vehicles though, use washers now on their oil drain plugs, and it might need to be replaced.

They(washers) do have to be replaced after several oil changes.
I don't know what you are changing oil on, but NO, you should not need to change the plug. Oil filter, yes. Air filter, maybe.
no, but don't lose the rubber washer and when you put it back on, don't reef it on there and strip out the threads.
Might consider the plastic washer if it's leaking
    Nope.
only if you lose it or damage it

probab ly on the right side of your oilpan
it s a little square looking thing on the oilpan under where the engine is and u undo it to let the oil out and you put it back on andthen put oil in the top of the engine where is says oil and then install that back into the hole where you took it off of good luck
    on like oilpan
You should probably let someone else change the oil and filter, if you have no clue as too where this is.

But if you do attempt, remember lefty lucy righty tighty when removing drain plug and filter.

How to remove broken oil drain plug?

I was removing the engine oil drain plug and the head of the screw snapped off leaving the body of the screw in still. Its to far in to reach with a vice. Do I need a new oil pan? The screw I was trying to loosen is directly under the engine block. How can I remove it?How to remove broken oil drain plug?
yes it can be, professionally removed and retapped, next size upHow to remove broken oil drain plug?
I've seen these reverse threaded drill bit like things you can get that are designed to be drilled into the bodies of snapped off bolts.

You use them with a bi directional drill running backwards. Once they go in so far, they tighten up enough so you can (hopefully) use them to unscrew the broken bolt.

    Try the auto parts store.
you can try an easy out but if that doesn't work you will have to take the pan off and either replace it or take the pan to a mechanic and let him get the broken part out.
NEW OIL PAN OR TAKE IT TO A SHOP WHO WELDS, I WELD A NUT TO THE BROKEN BOLT AND YOU CAN GET IT OUT THAT WAY

Car is leaking oil from oil drain plug how do i fix it?

the threading for where the screw is inserted is messed up not the screw/bolt itself and oil is leaking from the drain plug location. is there an easy way to fix this?Car is leaking oil from oil drain plug how do i fix it?
junk yard pan and bolt....new pan and bolt.. or tap the pre existing pan i would still drop the pan to do this any way metal shavings in the engine is bad ...also replace the oil pan gasket ..Car is leaking oil from oil drain plug how do i fix it?
depends on what the problem is. the drain plug is a softer material , and more prone to damage, but if the pan is damaged, you have one of three choices. one, you could find a last resort plug, kind of difficult to explain, a rubber plug with a metal screw going trough it and a t bar on the other end that will pull toward the head of the screw. this is a temporary fix only. or you could use the self tapping, over-sized drain plug that someone else mentioned. the best bet if the pan is damaged, is to replace the oil pan. all of this can be avoided if the plug itself is the source of the damage. heck, that plug is only what $5.00?
A tap %26amp; die set will help you to fix the threads on the pan,OR,you can go to a wrecking yard and get another pan. OR youcan try using some teflon tape around the threads on the bolt itself. Enough of it will stop the leak and not harm any other parts of the motor, plus the plug will still be easily removed...
tap and re-thread oil pan....or get a junkyard oil pan and install it. I'd go with junkyard oil pan... and if someone else (sevice station or whomever you use for oil changes) cross-threaded that plug don't go to them again!!!
go to auto zone and get a self tapping drain plug, they make their own threads, when you putting it in, just go back and forth so it can cut its own threads.
You will have to let the oil drain out then run a tap through the threads. Thats about all you can do.
I recommend you to buy a new oil pan , because in the future its gonna give you the same problems if you thread it.
you can buy a self tapping drain plug from your local parts store to fix the problem

below is a link to what your oil pan should look like its bottom of engine

the drain plug is on the side of pan and yes if you cannot remove it

the last oil change you have done over tighten the bolt it should be torqued to 15-20 ft pounds in the oil pan it self there are not many threads

if over tighten you will strip the bolt threads then you will need a new oil pan so which way are you turning the bolt? good thing to remember

lefty looses righty to tighten counter clockwise to remove clockwise to install hopefully the link below is your pan you didn't leave enough info

LrWhere is the oil drain plug on a 2005 ford focus?
The sump plug is a No.13 tapered bolt with its own rubber seal in a groove between it and the sump proper. The sump plug is at the bottom of the sump (naturally enough), which should be a big metal buckety thing under the crankcase.

In general try to remember the principle ';tighty righty, lefty loosen';, which should help you in getting the damn thing off. Quite often the rubber seal may have melted solid and acts like a glue holding the plug fast to the sump.

The best thing to get the little critter off is a ring spanner, or if that doesn't work try force hammering a smaller ring spanner onto it. If worse comes to worse, you could always weld another piece of metal onto it and get it off that way.

In general you should always replace the sump plug rather than put back the old one. That way you get a new fitted seal.
if you don't know where it is, or how to take it out, don't try to save 10 bucks on an oil change. engines are expensive and if you don't know what you're doing saving like 10 bucks isn't worth a couple thousand for an engine.

Suck it out the dipstick tubeIs there a way to remove oil from my engine without removing the oil drain plug or filter?
I think Walmart might have a pump for changing oil in a motor. It might be in the boating section.

Or you could go to a boat store and get on there.
Good news: all you need to do is to use the same procedure used for removing oil from marine engines, which usually have inadequate clearance betwen the oil pan and the vessel's hull for normal oil draining. That is, insert a length of thin vinyl tubing down the dipstick tube and suck the oil out with an inexpensive manual pump available for this purpose from marine suppliers -- also usually found in the marine section of large discount stores like Wal-Mart.

    Good luck!
just remove the drain plug and start all over, this time add the right amount.do not run the engine if its overflowed, its worse than being underfilled

Self tapping oil drain plug: How tight can I make it? Will they always leak?

I had one put in by Jiffy Lube two oil changes ago. It was fine for months (5000 miles). Then I had someone else change the oil. He said that these plugs are only good for about 5 changes, then I need a new oil pan. But since he changed it, I have spots on my driveway. Could it be he didn't tighten it enough, for fear of breaking something?

He/they may have lost the neoprene or brass sealing washer.
it's just a tapered rethredding plug that when tight and the neopreme washer on it will be as good as the factory plug and shouldn't wear out or leak as long as the gasket is on there.

How does a shop remove the cap?How do you remove a oil drain plug from a car?
It's just tight. You can't break it with an air wrench? Get a hollow pipe to put over the socket handle for leverage and turn. It HAS to come loose. How do you remove a oil drain plug from a car?
You won't be saving any cash..... YOU have to buy the filter and the oil. YOU have to dispose of the oil (you can't pour it on the ground, it's hazardous waste) YOU have to dispose of the old oil filter (same reason). YOU have never changed oil in your life, and anybody that knows anything at all wouldn't use air tools to do it. And do you have a grease gun to lubricate the chassis? Do you know where all the grease zerks are located? For all that you don't know, you should take it to Jiffy Lube or Oil Express and have it done in about ten minutes.
    NB?

Say that malibu comes with a(n) Aluminum oil pan, the torque for the drain plug is 18ft.lbs..

    There is no way you shouldn't be able to remove it with a 3/8';

    ratchet and 15mm socket?

I recommend that you take it to a service facility and watch them remove and reinstall that plug,

Also too loosen the drain plug you need to turn the plug in a counter clockwise direction.
put a little more muscle into it it's not rusted

Actually, the drain plug is on the passenger side of the engine, at the front corner of the oil pan. It has a 13mm head on the drain plug, with a large (about 7/8';) rubber washer under it (made to the drain plug). If the engine is a 2.7 liter V-6, it's right under the oil filter. Be careful not to over-tighten it when reinstalling! It screws into an aluminum pan and it's not too hard to ';strip'; the threads! Finger tight plus a little extra ';tweak'; with a wrench is all it needs.Where would i find the oil drain plug for 2000 chrysler concorde?

How can i get an oil drain plug off that has been rounded/stripped?

Its rounded on the head of the bolt. I've tried Gator Grip, Vice Grips with no luck. Its on there VERY tight. How can i get an oil drain plug off that has been rounded/stripped?
Use a ';easy out'; . You first drill a small hole in the bolt.(you may want to use a dremel to grind a spot in the exact middle so you dont get it off center)then you drill a larger hole with the size needed for the easy out.(it should have the bolt size/drill size requirements on the package) then after the drilling you screw the easy out into the bolt and when you remove it ,it locks the bolt and takes it out with it.Be careful not to drill all the way through. It would get real messy)How can i get an oil drain plug off that has been rounded/stripped?
using a hacksaw blade cut a straight line across the head of the bolt for a large flat tip screw driver, the use a manual impact driver to loosen the bolt
i have in the past, use a small chisel and on the edge of the plug to remove these, just tap lightly in the counter clockwise direction
If its a metal plug and metal pan, away from plastics, hoses, wires, etc... use a propane torch or a heat air gun to heat the plug area. Then spray it with penetrant oil (WD40) and then crack it out with vice grips.
pipe wrench or beat a smaller socken on it with a hammer
A pipe wrench will turn any bolt.
whatever means you use, dont try to use tourque to turn it, instead use a hammer to tap it loose. next time, do not overtighten it, or kick the persons *** who put a stripped plug back in.
They have special sockets available at most auto parts store that remove rounded bolts. Just ask they'll know what to give you.
vice grips would work it you put a longer handle on for more leverage, or anything with a long handle...i recomend a pipe wrench....and you can extend that handle by slipping a piece of pipe over the end of that handle!
Buy a new plug and take car somewhere to have oil changed. I am sure they will be able to remove plug and put new one in. Should not cost anything extra. Then you can change it yourself next time.
two ways first you can drill it tap it insert a left hand thread and it should screw out

second .quicker and less bother .. cut the top off a bolt and weld the top of it to the stump of the old plug then it will unscrew

Honda uses 17mm for all their oil drain bolts.
a Cressent wrench ! FARMER TOOLS yee haww!
9/16 is 14 mm.. so thats to small

11/16 is 17mm .. so could be to big..

5/8 is 15 mm .. but these are aproximate sizes

you would be better off going %26amp; buying a metric socket set..

or open end/ ring spanner set..
I think it is the size 17 millimeter
guessing either a 15mm or 17mm but I can check tonight after I get home if the sun is still up (no lights in the shop yet) on my daughter's bike ...

do you have a metric socket set? if not, try a 9/16, 5/8 and 11/16 ... one of those might work since they hit all around a 15mm and 17mm...

    EDIT: either a 15/16 or a 24mm will work at least on my daughter's '04 CRF230.

I guess I should ask what you have tried that is too small and too large ...

What is the Size of oil drain plug and transmission pan bolts for a 1995 Suburban?

I need to know what size (metric) of wrench I need to take out the drain plug for the motor oil, and the bolts for the transmission pan on the 1995 Suburban.

    5.7 liter V8 with a 4l60e transmission.

thanksWhat is the Size of oil drain plug and transmission pan bolts for a 1995 Suburban?
15mm on the oil drain plug and 13mm on the trans pan bolts.Best of luck. What is the Size of oil drain plug and transmission pan bolts for a 1995 Suburban?
the drain plug is either a 15 or 13mm, but the pan bolts are 13mm.

How can I get out a stuck oil drain plug?

I just bought a truck with high milage and it appears noone has changed the oil in a pretty long time. The drain plug won't budge for anything. I have wrenched it till it's nearly stripped out and I don't want to keep doing it till it's rounded off. Are there any tricks I can try?How can I get out a stuck oil drain plug?
Weld a new nut on top of the old plug so you can get a socket on the new nut and put an impact to it. It should come off.How can I get out a stuck oil drain plug?
vice grips or pipe wrench then get a new one
Use a 6 point socket, 1/2 drive if you can and tap really good on the ratchet handle. You can even get a peice of pipe and put over the end of the ratchet for leverage, like a 2 foot section.
have somebody weld a nut to the end of the plug and you can usually turn it out. try using a 6 point socket.
use an impact wrench...The vibs will loosen the rusted plug...Be careful...you should use a 12 point socket to do this.
Take it in to the dealer and have them change the oil. A good shop tech will get it off much easier than you can and he'll probably put a new plug in for you.
Take a cigarret lighter or fire starter and hold it to the plug until it gets so hot you cannot touch it. This will expand the metal. Let it cool then try taking it out. Its worth a shot. Red hot works on rusted oil field bolts like a charm but dont burn down the truck. If worse comes to worse get an ease-out of the proper size and drill a hole through it and then screw it out.
WD-40, torque wrench with 12-point socket, if it still slips, weld a new nut on top of the old one, you can re use it if you want, or get a replacement. The fire is also a good idea, but have a fire extinguisher and a friend nearby. Butane lighter gets hottest fastest, so try that. Or remove the pan, and get a new one, but make sure you get one that includes gasket and plug. That's pretty much all your options.
    Use a drill.

What will likely happen if the oil drain plug is over tightened while changing oil?

what are the engine oils 4 main task

what are 5 safety precautions taken when changing oil

why must the oil fliter be hand-tightened only?

and what is the measurement of diameter of the threaded hole in the oil fliter????What will likely happen if the oil drain plug is over tightened while changing oil?
you'll strip the threads on the oil pan. What will likely happen if the oil drain plug is over tightened while changing oil?
if you over tighten the drain plug you will probably strip the threads and it will not tighten correctly again. oil leak...
If you over tighten the oil pan plug you might strip it out and then it will not tighten and it will leak. If this happens you can get an expansion plug froman auto parts store that will do the trick.
sounds to me like you are doing homework and should look up the answers yourself. If you don't leanr it your not going to be able to do your job, and I for one get my car screwed up because of you, you can better believe I will sue for damages. Take your time and do the work yourself. Good luck.
If it is overtightened, it could strip the threads but also it could shear the head off the nut when the engine heats up and there's no where for it to expand. Then you'll never get that plug out again without an extractor.
if you overtightened oil drain plug, you probably will strip the thread and resulting oil leak.

engine oil lubricates all moving parts inside the engine, breaks down heat build up, keeps engines cooler(at normal operating temp) and prolong engines life.

before changing oil, let the engine cool down ,park on level surface, parking break on, use jack stands, and use wheels blocks. hand tighten oil filter only because when time comes to take if off again you gonna need Hercules go get it off for you, if he's around. the diameter of the thread hole in the oil filter varies. Different makes of cars, different oil filter.
If you over tighten the drain plug, you might strip the threads.....

The engine oils main task is lubrication of all moving parts which prevents wear of all moving metal parts of the engine.

Only hand tighten the oil filter because it will be very hard to take it off if you tighten it with a tool. The threaded hole in the oil filter are many sizes.....3/4 and 5/8 and 2 sizes.
    1. You won't be able to get it off next time.

    2. lubrication

    3. let the engine cool off or you might get burned

    4. So you don't overtighten it.

    5. They are not all the same. But mine looks about 5/8th.
Ask one question at a time.
I can tell you for a fact that the oil filter must only be hand tightened or else you will NEVER be able to get it off when its time. I know from personal experience because this happened to my husband the first time he did it to our car, and it took him forever to get it off. He said even an elephant couldn't get it off.
1 You may shear it or strip the threads.

2 use axle stands (Not only a Jack)

3 wait till it cools as hot oil can burn you.4

    4 use a drip tray

5 dispose of old oil properly (Dont tip it down the drain)

1 Lubrication, 2 cooling, 3 wear prevention, 4 prevention of siezing up.

oil filter diameter, depends on size of engine/filter, %26amp; do you mean internal or external thread size?
your might have to use a cheat bar to get better leverage on the oil plug,if not you need an air tool to losen the bolt.
if you over tighten you will stip the threads and it will leak
as long as you don't strip the threads its ok

maybe give it 15 foot pounds or so, thats enough,

    its 1/2 inch maybe
it may strip (really bad) or it will be so tight you cant get it off next time

oil tasks are lubrication, cooling cleaning and operation of hydralic component

oil change safety- oil is toxic, protect hands and environment. dont overfill, clean around oil fill and drain, use correct viscosity of oil

only hand tighten filer as it uses a rubber seal. to much tesnsion causes the seal to distend and under pressure blow out. plus if its too tight it will be impossible to get off

dunno, varies with makes and models.

why do i feel like i've just dont someones homework?

  • How often should an oil drain plug be replaced?

I've resorted to changing the oil for my 1997 Honda Civic DX myself. How often (if ever) should I replace the drain plug? How often should an oil drain plug be replaced?
You should never have to replace the drain plug, but typically there is a washer on the drain plug that assists in creating a seal between the drain plug and the oil pan.

They typically make two different types. One made of fiber is typically replaced every time. They are soft and crush easily to form a good seal. They also typically make them out of copper (which is what I get). They are in theory suppose to eventually be replaced, but I have yet to replace one. The fiber gaskets are like $0.10 each. The copper ones are like $0.60 each. How often should an oil drain plug be replaced?
Never, unless you strip the threads on it. There would be no reason to do it otherwise.
There's a washer available from Honda, but the plug goes forever as long as you take your time and don't cross thread it. I don't even bother changing the washers. So far, no leaks.
You should make sure if there is a plastic washer that its in good shape The drain plug should be replaced when the gasket surface starts to get scarred up under the gasket .I had to replace one because it had been overtightened and distorted the head and wouldn't seal.
The drain plug on the oil pan doesn't have to be replaced. Thank god because I think they're like 10 bucks on those civics.
well i used to replace some drain plugs on cars around 50k just because they dont seal well all the time plus they start to round off or rust also the ones with the built in gasket start to carrode after about 50k so its better to be safe than sorry

Does an oil drain plug become stripped when putting it in or taking it out?

I had my oil changed in August and the place said that my drain plugged had been stripped last time my oil was changed (at a different place). I told them it wasn't leaking and wouldn't it be leaking if damaged last time and they said no. They replaced it with another plug, not similiar to the original. A few days later my car started leaking oil. I took it to a mechanic and he had to replace the oil pan because he said the plug had ruined the pan and couldn't be re-tapped. I went back to the place that changed my oil and they said the original plug was not stripped by them and that the plug they put in didn't cause any damage to the oil pan. I'm out a lot of money. Does anyone know who is at fault, without seeing the plugs of course.Does an oil drain plug become stripped when putting it in or taking it out?
Most times stripping comes while putting in. They start it at an angle or way over tighten it, but it won't leak. The problem comes when you remove it, the bolt is stripped (Cross Threaded) pan is the same and no matter what when you reinstall it it's going the leak and maybe even fall out. The only thing that can really be done is they (Where you are at this time) is try to rethread the pan and install a new oil pan plug.Does an oil drain plug become stripped when putting it in or taking it out?
Its very hard to place blame. A plug can be stripped out if overtightened, but in most cases, plugs and the oil pan threads do wear and become loose over time. If your vehicle has a lot of mileage and the oil is changed often, it could be the threads just worn out.
    Honestly, it's impossible to say.

It's even possible that this new place you took it to did all the damage and they are simply blaming the prior place for damage that was caused by them.

Most reputable places, if they see the bolt was damaged by the prior place will actually refuse to perform the service for you because they can see the damage that was done by the prior place.

If they were going to replace the plug, why didn't they use a similar plug? What were the differences? If they used an improperly threaded bolt, then of course they are at fault. How to prove it is a whole other story unfortunately.

It sounds like this place you took it to damaged the threading, to the oil pan and caused all the problems, but it will be very difficult for you to prove it.
Without seeing the plugs, you just have to suck it up and pay the money. Somebody stripped the plug and just hoped it would hold until you made it off of their lot. This is why mechanics have such a bad name.

Where is the oil filter and oil drain plug for Toyota Corolla 2006?

I bought this car 5 months ago and its time for me to change oil , oil filter and air filter. Since its a new car I cant find the answer in textbooks. Thanks.Where is the oil filter and oil drain plug for Toyota Corolla 2006?
if you need to look for the answers in a text book as to where stuff is located, maybe you should take it to the dealer, or a jiffy lube.

How to loosing a dense Oil Drain plug from an oil pan if a wrench or socket wrench won't work?

This is related to a 2006 Toyota Corolla CE.How to loosing a dense Oil Drain plug from an oil pan if a wrench or socket wrench won't work?
You may have to remove the oil pan completely. This is done my unbolting one side. Then with something to catch the oil unbolt the two adjoining sides until the oil flows out. Then undo the remaining edge. Also make sure that the engine oil is not warm as this could burn you easily. After you have removed the pan from the car you may have to use something like a gator grip to get it out. At worse you would need to drill the bolt out and retap the hole. How to loosing a dense Oil Drain plug from an oil pan if a wrench or socket wrench won't work?
spray down the bolt with a penetrating oil like pb blaster or wd40. you can also slip a pipe over a socket wrench to gain more leverage in breaking the bolt free. or you could use a breaker bar.

however, my favorite method is slipping a socket wrench over the bolt and leaving the wrench at angle towards the ground. then slide a floor jack under the wrench and use the jack to push the wrench in the desired direction
First pick up a new oil drain plug from a Toyota dealer. Then use a pair of locking pliers (Visegrips) to grasp %26amp; remove the stuck plug.

    Drain the oil.

    Toss out the old plug.

Put in the new one - do not overtighten.

    Add oil.
If all else fails, drill a hole through it,then file opposite sides and hammer in a chisel, then use a pipe wrench on the chisel to undo..
What do you mean by ';dense';? Thick?
    air hammer
try a good pair of vise grips
do yu smell what the rock is cooking

I use a socket with a short extension to get to the drain on wife's Magna. Its kind of buried near the radiator hose.

On a petrol engine , if the engine oil level s above the maximum mark , will make light on dash 2 come on?

Can 2 much oil cause low pressure ? Car is a Honda Prelude , 2L , UK spec . Thanks , i know the marks r there 4 a reason , but by accident i put on 2 much oil and i m going 2 do it proper , but 2day had 2 drive it for a couple of miles and light was flashing . I stop it , of course . Nothin in manual about 2 much oil , i thought light only come on if low level . Thank u all .On a petrol engine , if the engine oil level s above the maximum mark , will make light on dash 2 come on?
same problem on my vw took it to a garage for service %26amp; overfilled it with oil the light came on %26amp; flashed got home checked the dipstick above max so undone the sump plug drained some oil out so i was in between min/max job doneOn a petrol engine , if the engine oil level s above the maximum mark , will make light on dash 2 come on?
Yes it can. Too much oil in the sump can cause the crankshaft to churn it up into a foam, which obviously contains air. Once the oil pump takes that foam in the air in it causes the oil pressure to drop.
too much oil can be just as bad as not enough, and yes it could cause the light to come on. get the excess oil out of that engine unless you want to cause damage to your engine.
I wouldnt think so, but putting too much oil in ur engine is just as bad as too little. It can blow ur oil seals for starters. Get excess oil out if its a lot.
