Engine oil - filled above maximum mark - what should I do?!?

Hello

I topped up my oil this morning in my Fiat Brava as it was practically empty. I put too much oil in - I'm not sure how much a quart would looks like on the dipstick but the oil level is about 2cm (no more) over the max mark. Is this likely to do any damage to my engine? Should I call the AA out? Advice much appreciated!Engine oil - filled above maximum mark - what should I do?!?
It is best to drain out the extra oil. You can damage your engine if it is overfilled by a lot. I would reccomend to drain out the extra oil as soon as possible. If you have to drive some before this is possible oyu should be OK as long as there is not more than a quart or two too much.Engine oil - filled above maximum mark - what should I do?!?
drain the excess out ....doesnt need to be done this very second ,unless you are going to be going on a healthy drive,,,but it will increase oil pressure and could damage engine......ps if its a 1.4 12 v brava oil filters need to be changed regular as they are prone to oil blockages
You will be ok, your engine will burn the excess.
Just drain some out, it could spill over and cause an engine fire if there is too much
Be safe and drain off the excess. Drain into a clean pan so you can save the oil and use it again.

Sometimes the top oil mark on the dipstick is not an exact science. So maybe you can get away with it.

The thing to keep in mind is that the oil level is kept under a safe level so that it won't be hit the reciprocating engine parts or gear-mesh areas of the engine which might cause the oil to foam.

Foamy engine oil is damaging to your engine because it actually lowers oil pressure, reduces oil reaching to critical lubricating points, less oil going through the oil filter, and less heat exchange at the engine oil cooler. And it causes a bad cascading side effect: actually increases oil volume thereby making a bad situation get worse.
Any more than a liter over and you're asking for it. 2cm will be fine. Some may splash up onto the cylinders and you'll get a bit of blue smoke in your exhaust.

Learn from your mistakes.
2 cm above max could harm your engine at higher revs; also, the excess oil will get into the air intake manifold, from there into the cylinders, where it will be burnt - most likely ruining your catalytic converter! In order to remove the oil, you can either use a length of clear plastic hose, suck the oil up to a certain level, then release it into an empty can, or you could loosen the oil screw at the bottom of the oil pan just enough to drain some of the oil, making sure, of course, that none of it gets spilled!
I have heard that it can blow the engine seals, causing permanent oil leaks. Of course, you can always just take it and have the oil changed and they will handle it for you.

Best regards,

Mike
It's hard to tell how overfilled 2cm is on a dipstick. It's different for every car. A little too much oil rarely causes damage. But much too much oil will cause damage. It's best to be safe. If you can do it yourself, let the engine cool off, jack up the car %26amp; put it on jacklstands, open the drain plug for three seconds and let some oil drain out. If your can't do it yourself, then yes call someone out. If you're brave enough to drive it, take it to a lube shop. Because your car was low on oil, it's agood idea to have the oil changed anyway to get some of the sludge out and have a fres oil filter installed.
Dont drive this car!

to much oil could over presurise the engine and blow the piston valves, under the engin is a bit pan called a sump. on the side of the sump is a bolt, this bolt acts as a plug. Just unscrew this bolt and drain some oil out
