Help -- two crush washers on oil drain plug... what is the worst that can happen?

I changed the oil today on my sportbike today. When I drained the oil, I couldn't find any crush washer, so I figured it was lost somewhere in the old oil and put a new crush washer on.

Now I am starting to think the old washer was still on the bolt. People with the same bike say that the old washers can be very hard to get off... you will have to pry the old one off with needle nose pliers and then cut the washer with something in order to get it off the plug.

Is it bad to have two crush washers on an oil plug? What could happen? This is a motorcycle so if the plug backs out while the bike is running the oil will end up on the rear tire.... and that can get ugly! But on the other hand it's definitely not leaking while the bike is off.Help -- two crush washers on oil drain plug... what is the worst that can happen?
You are over thinking this -

Drive it - if it drips, take it back off, get a new single washer %26amp; put it on.

If it doesn't drip, do it right next oil changeHelp -- two crush washers on oil drain plug... what is the worst that can happen?
if u have to crush washers on it and it's tight the most it will do is drip a little, but if not tight enought it could vibrate loose and you know what hapens to engines with no oil in them.
I do now that nowadays a lot of auto manufacturers and maybe others no longer use a gasket washer . They use a drain plug that once removed must be replaced with new. Maybe the reason you didnt have one in the first place.

It's the one in the frame, on the right side of the bike, near the swingarm. Replace the o-ring when you change the oil, and clean any debris off the magnetic tip of the drain plug.

If you remove the line from the tank, you'll have to bleed the air out of the lines after the oil change. Don't do that. Remove the drain plug using a 6 point socket or an allen wrench. Don't over-torque it on re-installation. Factory spec is 14-21 foot pounds.

Where is the oil drain plug on a 2006 harley 883 sportster?

The drain HOSE is attached by a clip to the frame under the bike on the left side behind the primary.

You need to buy a FACTORY service manual if you intend on doing your own work.

Proper oil change method......FOLLOW THIS ORDER!!!

Remove drain plug, then oil dipstick

Remove filter, install new filter with fresh oil on O-Ring

When oil tank is empty, pour in some fresh oil and allow a couple ounces to run out the drain hose (this will bleed out the air from the hose and prevent air from getting into the oil pump and causing cavitation)

    Install drain plug.

Fill oil tank with 2 1/2 quarts fresh oil

Run bike for about 5 minutes to heat it up.

Stand bike upright, fill tank as needed to reach the full mark on dipstick.

At 2500 miles I recommend synthetic, NEVER BEFORE 2500. Same synthetic engine oil is ok for the primary/trans.

Below is my recommendation and info on syn oils....based on Big Twins, but same principles apply to Sportsters.....

Engine oil is obvious, check at OPERATING temp, standing upright

Trans oil dipstick is on the right side trans end cover, check upright

Primary oil is checked by removing the clutch(derby) cover while bike is upright, proper level is bottom of clutch diaphragm spring riding in the oil.

Here is some info on oils......

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker

You should really get yourself a FACTORY service manual if you don't know this basic info.....it will pay for itself very quickly, just by knowledge alone!!!!!!

You want to stick with 20/50 (MAKE SURE IT IS FOR V-TWIN MOTORCYCLES....NOT AUTOMOTIVE OIL!!!!)......you can also run the same oil the primary/trans

As much I love HD....I hate to say it, but HD doesn't know SH*T about synthetic oil. For decades, they said not to run synthetic in their engines.....because of popular demand by the public, HD finally came out with their SYN3 synthetic oil several years ago, but it is honestly not worth a crap. THE BEST 3 SYNTHETICS FOR A HARLEY ARE

#1-AMSOIL, #2-LUCAS, #3-MOBIL1(which is recommended by S%26amp;S). I have been working on HD's and building performance engines, drag racing and dyno tuning for 20 years and have been running Amsoil for years, but have recently switched over to Lucas because it is just as good, but a little cheaper. AND THEY DO NOT AND WILL NOT VOID YOUR WARRANTY

FIRST OFF.........DO NOT RUN HD SYN3.....IT'S JUNK.........I AM A CERTIFIED HD TECH, AND I WILL TELL YOU FIRST HAND....HD DOESN'T KNOW JACK ABOUT OILS!!!!!!!!!

For deacdes, HD said to never run synthetic in their engines, their reason....it will cause the bearings to ';skate';.........but ask anyone on the drag strip running a top fuel 800+ HP engine what they run.......FULL SYNTHETIC.......their bearings don't skate!!!

By popular demand of the public, HD finally released their SYN3 back in the early 2000's......manufactured by Sunoco. SO........

Second......why would you WANT to go longer between oil changes?......esprcially on an Ultra, the baggers are subjected to to more engine strain than the other models due to their weight, plus they run hotter from not as much aie flow, that's why they have a larger oil tank to aid in cooling. FRESH OIL IS CHEAP INSURANCE AGAINST ENGINE FAILURE. Standard oil you should change every 2500 miles. You CAN go about 3500 on synthetic, but why? Scheduled PREVENTATIVE MAINTENANCE set by the factory are based every 2500 miles, IT IS BEST TO CHANGE YOUR OIL EVERY 2500 MILES....SYN or STD. Keeping up on the maintenace, prevents major breakdowns. It's btter to spend $400 or so a couple times a year than spend a few thousand to repair something that was caused by lack of maintenance.

As the other guys have said, synthetic does make your engine run cooler and lubricates much better than standard oil.

The best synthetic to run is 1) AMSOIL or LUCAS 2) Mobil 1

It is ok to run the same synthetic in the primary as you do the engine.......but NEVER use that same oil in the trans. HD says you can, but it makes the trans hard to shift and noisy......run minimum 75/90 gear oil......best if its 85/140......the absolute hands down best trans oil on the market is RED LINE full synthetic Shockproof 85/140...it will make your trans runs smoother, quiter and shift easier.

No, sounds like you need a new drain plug. If your changing oil yourself, draining and refilling then you should replace the drain plug every now and again when you change the oil.

If you have just changed the oil, then i suggest you re-drain the oil, get a new drain plug. Put the oil back in to the correct level. You may of over tightened the plug when you put it back on, cracked the gasket etc.Can adding too much oil to a car after an oil change result in oil drain plug leaks?
No it can not, at least not to the actual drain plug. It is just not good for enigne and it can leak out other parts. If the drain plug is leakin make sure it is tight, if it is make sure it is not striped and check and make sure the gasket is in good condition. Nope sure can't if ur oil drain plug is leaking the seal around the bolt is shot or sooommmmeeebody dident tighten it alll the way but umm to much oil could cause a big boom or a lot of white substances coming from the exaust and I aint talking crack umm do ur self a favor drain some of the oil out and go get a new plug please I hate stopping to help people on the highway
it will not cause a leak at that point, but the main seals are prone to failure in this situation.
I dont think so but if you added to much oil i think you will know by seeing alot of smoke ;-o
No. It will cause foaming of the oil in the engine and bearing failure.

Is that you John B Dipstick?
The oil cap is under the hood, on the top of the engine's valve cover, it is usually black in color. The dip stick should be on the right side of the engine if you are facing the car from the front, and it should be a golden yellow color. The drain plug should be located under the vehicle on the engine's oil pan, it should take a 14, or 17 mm wrench, and be black in color.
if you dont know basics such as these, you should be trying to do your own oil change. look at some pictures online, im pretty sure there HAS to be a page on how to change your oil.

er .. How the heck do i get this thing off ?its almost completly roundedWelp i tryed to change my oil on my 65 dodge and my dam oil drain plug is stripped ..It does not move whatsoev?
    HEAT...

A propane torch (MAPP gas preferred-burns hotter), pair of heavy gloves, safety eyewear and a good set of locking pliers or vice grips. Heat the plug cherry red, this will allow the vice grips or pliers to ';bite'; into the plug. Gently work the plug loose, being careful not to distort the drain-plug hole opening.Welp i tryed to change my oil on my 65 dodge and my dam oil drain plug is stripped ..It does not move whatsoev?
First, use penetrating oil to loosen the bolt. Let it penetrate for about 5 minutes. Then try using a 6 point socket. If that doesn't work, try vice grips. If that doesn't work, try using a socket that is one size smaller than the bolt. If not of these things work, you're going to have to take the oil pan off. Take a few bolts of the pan on one side to let all the oil drain out. Once it's drained all the way, finish removing the bolts to take off the pan. Once it's off, you can use a bolt extracting kit. You drill a hole in the bolt and the use the provided bit to extract it. Just make sure you clean the pan extremely well, making sure there are no metal shavings on it or in it when you put it back on. You can also clean the pan really well, then use a torch on the outside of the pan to heat around the bolt. The metal should expand and the bolt should be able to come out easily with vice grips.
i would try vise grips, if you have the room to turn it. but first try spraying a little penetrating oil on it. then, clamp the vise grips as hard as you can to the bolt. if you cant turn it hard enough, put a piece of pipe on the end of the vise grips to give ya more torque. And just for the record righty-tighty, lefty-loosey. unfortunately that bolt is toast, and you will have to buy a replacement.

i want to change the oil myself so i need a very good description or picture would help me in finding it...and wat do i need to take it off?Where is the oil drain plug located on my 99 GMC Sierra?
stand directly in front of the hood of your vehicle, get on your back, and crawl directly under your sierra head first, the oil drain plug will be on the very bottom of you engine and will be bigger than the rest of the other bolts any where else on the engine. A metric wrench set will have the proper wrench for removing the bolt. The filter should be to your left, usually they are only hand tight and you might not need a tool to remove it, just twist it off. make sure the old gasket (the rubber on top of the filter) didnt stick to the engine, and replace it with a new filter after you have lubricated the new filter with a little oil to make sure it doesnt stick the next time you change the oil. Then fill your engine with oil to the amount recommended by the manufacturer, and check your dipstick to make sure it is filled with oil, turn the car on and then turn it off and check you dipstick again, it should be at the proper amount

dont just remove your oil filter, that is short cut but it doesnt drain all the old oil, and you dont wanna reuse old motor oil, gross manWhere is the oil drain plug located on my 99 GMC Sierra?
I belive its a 15mm bolt, if you crawl under the front of the truck directly in the middle you will see a pan with a bolt, it will be the lowest thing coming off the engine. remove the bolt and let the oil drain out to your container. Its best to drain the oil with the engine warm so the additives in the oil pick up everything inside the engine they can. Then use a filter wrench to remove the oil filter, its located I think on the left side of the engine just above the oil pan. Just unscrew the filter and wipe the mounting surface clean, that also makes sure the old oil filter gasket didnt stay stuck to the block. You might want to pour like 1/2 a quart of clean oil into the new filter to give the engine oil right away when you start it up. Also wipe a small amount of oil onto the new filters gasket to ensure a good seal. Fill the engine up with new oil and your done. To make sure how much oil you need look in your owners manual under ';capacitys';.
look for and remove the oil filter, thats all you need to do..good luck

If all else fails use a file and file down the head so you have two parallel surfaces, then use vice grips, or an adjustable wrench, or pipe wrench, but be sure to leave enough head on so it does not break off completely.Once you get a good grip on it, it should releaseI have a 2005 Dodge Strattus with a rounded off and stuck oil drain plug, how do I get it out?
Work along the flattest sides with a cold chisel and a hammer, banging it counterclockwise till it's loose.
You might use vicegrips to remove it, i think if you hammer on it you might damage the pan.

it's there, you just have look for it. You cannot see it from the front of the car while kneeling down. You have to be under the engine. It's on the bottom of the pan pointing to the rear of the car. IT's not a 14mm bolt, it's either a 14mm or 15mm socket head. Can anyone help to locate the oil drain plug and oil filter housing for the MBZ C320/yr 2003? Thx.?

I'll assume you're referring to the engine oil %26amp; filter. The oil filter housing is at the top and front of the engine on the driver's side. It's black and made out of plastic. You have to remove that and slip the new filter cartridge on to the housing. Make sure to replace all the seals or it may develop oil leaks.

no, the plug gets put back in there, change the oil FILTERDo I need to change ';oil drain plug'; while changing oil ?
No, what happens in the oil sump above the plug is that the oil gets splashed around the engine, lubricating the parts. There would be little point in changing the plug unless it was damaged.

Maybe if there is some very gloopy oil stuck to it then it would be worth while giving it a clean to prevent unsuitable oil reaching the rest of the engine. But other than that it still serves it's purpose which is to plug the oil sump. Hope that helps
Plan to reuse the old drain plug. It will work fine as long as you don't cross the threads putting it back in. If it goes in hard, don't force it. Back it out, lube the threads with a drop or two of oil and try again. A bit of oil on the plug washer is also a good idea, to help you seal the plug and prevent losing the new motor oil.
Nope, you don't. Reuse the old one but if you have to change the gasket if you are noticing a leak and if you have to change the whole plug (i.e.: threads are striped) try a magnetic plug.
You only need to change if it was somehow damaged. I would change the copper washer, though. It's usually less than $2 from your local auto parts store or 1.5-3 times more if you get it from the dealerships.
The oil drain plug simply allows all the old oil to leave the tank. When it is drained you reattach it and change the oil filter.
You reuse the old one but I suggest most of the time to replace the little gasket on the drain plug.
no u can reuse the drain plug for years if for some reason it feels loose then hanger it but it should last as long as your car
No. But don't forget to change the oil filter when changing the oil

  • Is it normal to see some oil on the oil drain plug after an oil change or should it be completely dry of oil?

When I looked at the oil drain plug the first time it looked like it had some oil on it (maybe some oil is seeping out?). So I dried it with a paper towel and it was dry. When I came back a few minutes later to check it the oil drain plug looked like it had some oil on it again. Is it normal to have some oil around the oil drain plug so I can tell if I need to tighten it more?

95 Honda Civic LXIs it normal to see some oil on the oil drain plug after an oil change or should it be completely dry of oil?
    jaydubb has a good answer

Never over-tighten the drain plug or you can and likely will eventually damage the threads on the oil pan [not the drain plug]. This is common. To help prevent this from happening you should always replace the aluminum drain plug washer with each oil change. It will compress a bit when you tighten the drain plug. If you use the old one over and over you have to keep tightening the drain plug a bit more each time to compress the washer. Better to use a new one each time. They cost less from an auto parts store than from the dealer. Small price to pay for peace of mind.

Here is a great web page that addresses the problem and offers multiple solutions http://classic.artsautomotive.com/HondaO鈥?/a> One of the best solutions they offer is using a fiber drain plug gasket instead of the aluminum one as follows:

    ';Use a fiber washer.

Toyota has used fiber washers for years. Toyota's current generation of oil pans never have drain plug or oil pan issues. If your pan has only mild thread or sealing surface damage, using fiber washers can buy some time. The problem with fiber washers is they will frequently get switched back to aluminum washers with the next oil change. A mechanic will see the fiber washer on a Honda and say, ';Hey, that's the wrong kind of washer; I'll fix it'; as they put an aluminum washer in it's place. Also, many shops will not have a supply of 14mm fiber washers, since they are not original equipment for any car that I know of.';Is it normal to see some oil on the oil drain plug after an oil change or should it be completely dry of oil?
It isnt normal, tighten it again, take your car for a spin come back and put some white paper underneath the drainplug. If you have any spills then you need to change the plug.

When the car is running the oil gets warm it will leak even more. I suggest you drain and get a new drain plug, if its new oil then drain and put it back in. If your due for an oil change then change the oil and get a new drain plug
If you wiped it totally clean then there should not be any more oil. This IS a frequent problem though. I have had the plug not tight enough after they changed the oil. I have had the plug stripped, so it leaked. And I have had the plug put in crooked which caused it to leak. They do the oil changes so fast that any of the above can occur. I keep an extra new one in my car now so that when they screw up, I take it back and make them put in the new one. I also make them refill the oil they lost putting in the new one. I did that twice and now they seem to be getting it right every time.
There shouldnt be any oil after you wiped it.

Since I dont know how tight you've tighten it, it might be that you need to replace you're o-ring.

The drain plug should be tight, so it doesn't move easily.

2003 Mazda Protege - missing oil drain plug, car died?

A few hours after an oil change on my 2003 Protege, my oil light came on. I was on a country road with no shoulder, just a big ditch, and had to drive a couple miles to find a turn off - as I did, car died. Car towed to nearest Mazda dealer - oil drain plug was missing and all oil lost. That dealer tells me they replaced the drain plug, refilled oil and car started. Ran rough, so they adjusted timing belt and now running fine. I do all maintenance and oil changes with my local dealer, who has agreed to pay costs for other place's work. I don't have car back yet and haven't been able to drive it myself yet. Could someone tell me what I need to be careful of or look for when I get the car back tonight? Is there a possibility of major engine damage or future problems even if car is running ok right now? I was planning a big roadtrip starting this weekend - should I cancel? Thanks in advance for any advice.2003 Mazda Protege - missing oil drain plug, car died?
Hopefully your dealer will be able to tell you if anything is severely wrong, but it all depends on how long you were driving the car without oil. Most likely some damage occurred, and you're lucky your dealer is paying for the other place's shoddy work. I would say when you get it back, take it out for a drive and see if you feel anything different.

I would definitely be calling the other place back and trying to at least get a refund from them, especially since they almost cost you a new engine.2003 Mazda Protege - missing oil drain plug, car died?
i see some people write somethings good and others not good at all

valves are nothing to do with major damage the bearing does...

    timming nothing to do too....

if your car sudenly dies and when you hit the key starter dont move your engine then you have a blow engine that happens when heat melt together the bearings to the main parts like piston or crankshaft

if dealer fill with new oil and the car ran rough..... there is major damage on it no doubt, there is no an easy fix for this, you have to pull engine apart and replace part by part, in some worst scenarios crankshaft can be twisted and need major machine shop work to make the engine work properly or simply the cylinders have to bore up so much, that will take some good engine life by doing so

if the dealer told you they will pay for the damage at other not mazda related shop then you will need a new engine that is the best option and get the engine at pep boys or at your favorite engine shop but dont let the shop get the engine for you because the can get an used engine and charge you for a new engine so kept an eye on it
Possibility? There is no question there is major engine damage if you drove that far with no oil in the crankcase. The engine is shot. Even if it manages to run now, its life has been cut to a matter of months at best.

It is possible the drain plug slowly worked itself free as you were driving and all oil wasn't lost until the very end of your trip to the turn off, but when an oil light comes on or a gauge reads zero it is imperative the engine be shut off.

How long could you survive without any blood? And if you did, what shape would you be in? Brain damage from lack of oxygen, major organ damage and tissue decomposition. The same goes for an engine without oil. It is being run with no protection from heat, friction and pressure. All the moving parts are being subjected to metal to metal stress and a tremendous amount of heat. I'm sure the cooling system took a beating in this ordeal, too.

I doubt the timing belt jumped from lack of oil. The more likely problem is major valve train damage that has been compensated for by advancing or retarding the engine's timing.

That other shop owes you a new engine, accept nothing less, or you're going to be on the side of the road again with little or no recourse. And never, ever drive without oil again, even if you need to block a road. Someone would have come to your assistance.

    Good luck.
There is absolutley no doubt that the life span of your engine has been comprimised by running without oil.

Besides the damage to the valve train and possible scoring of the piston walls, the big problems are the white metal bearings that hold your crank, rods and camshafts in place. These bearings are extremly delicate and when not lubricated become scored or completley wiped by the rotation and excess heat.

Scored or wiped bearings result in ';Engine Knocking'; which is a noise produced by the shaft striking the bearings. In a normal situation where the bearings are in good condition a hydrodynamic oil wedge is formed which holds the shaft suspended away from the bearings, allowing lubricating oil to pass through the gap between the shaft and the bearing surface. If the oil is not present or the bearings are damaged the ';hydrodynamic wedge'; does not form allowing the shaft to rest on the bearings causing further damage to the bearings and the shaft as the engine is rotated.

Tests and advertisements for teflon based oils or engine coatings often run engines to destruction without oil present in the engine. The idea being that once and engine has been treated with a teflon product it will develop a non stick surface like a teflon coated frying pan. These teflon engine products are regarded by most industry experts with some scepticism as there are no guarantees of protection to the parts of your engine that require it. I doubt that your engine would have been treated in this manner.

Your dealer may have access to a borescope with which they can look through the spark plug holes to assess the condition of the cylinders, pistons and valves. A full engine oil analysis, is another option the dealer should have available on request, to establish if any white metal is present in the oil. This will give an indication of damage to vital bearings.

Reaslistically though, the only way to know the full extent of the damage to your engine is to do a complete inspection by pulling it a part.

I wouldnt be accepting the car back without some pretty strong guarantees and I certainly wouldnt be doing a long trip in it until this is sorted.

    Good luck
When the oil light comes on is when you turn the engine off. I know of one court case in which the dealership was only responsible for the drain plug and the oil, not any further damage.

Usually the first thing to get damage is either the number 2 or 3 rod bearing. This is usually the first one to go out and one of the first places that the oil goes to from the oil pump and filter.

I have seen two cases where a car was towed in without oil and drove out. I don't know what the long term results were.

I worked on one car that was towed to the shop where I worked. It had stalled at a stop light. The points and plugs were in really bad shape, so I did a tune up on it. (74 Rx4) While I was adjusting everything the car stopped. The car would not crank over. Battery was OK. I checked the oil dip stick and no oil was on the stick. I put car up on lift and pulled the drain plug. Nothing. Filled with oil. Started and ran fine. Again, don't know for how long.
Well if you drove a few miles with little and then no oil you did some damage. Have them do compression test to see how badly the cylinder walls are torn up. Hopefully the dealer/oil change place is upfront about it and agrees to cover the repairs due to their mistake.

I wouldn't take a road trip in that car until I was positive everything has been fixed correctly.
I also have a 03 mazda protege and if the oil plug was lost then your car was pretty much running off of nothing!! so honestly theres a possibility you could have engine damage!! maybe now maybe later!! But it's a 4 cylinder so they are pretty hard to tear up. But i would just watch it and see if it starts acting funny!! it would probably be a good idea to rent a car to go out of town, in case if your car does breakdown just to be on the safe side!!
If the oil would not have been in the crankcase when it left the dealers, the light would have been on then. But plugs in oil pans that are tightened down, don't just fall out. I would guess that it was not tight when you left and fell out.

As for major damage, if the engine just shut down, that the engine maybe alright. I have known of those that drove 50 miles with no oil and there was no damage to the engine. As a matter of fact at one time there was a commercial showing engines being run to seizure that had no oil in them.

My personnel opinion is that you should trade the car off, like in the next year. Because if there was major damage you will hear rod knocks and such on start up, but the engine may have a shortened life span

the leak used to be a slow drip and now is a very very slow drip.i have heard about putting a little teflon on the threads? is there a proper way of doing this? if not any other suggestions? How to stop oil drain plug leak after I replaced it with the factory plug%26amp;gasket but only slowed down the leak
Putting five or six turn of Teflon tape is the best solution to stop this kind of leaks. I have this kind of leaks before. I tried a lot of different ways to fix it. Using dealers gasket, of the shelve copper and aluminum washers and Including over tightening the drain plug that cause me to re threaded the oil pan. The trick is to wrap the Teflon tape clockwise when the threaded end of the drain plug is facing you. The layers of the Teflon should be depend on how lose your drain plug is. Give it little more if you have a bad plug. put a soft fiber type of gasket onto the plug first than wrap the threads with plumbing Teflon tape. Do not over wrap the drain plug. Try to concentrate the Teflon tape at the shoulder of plug where the plug and the wall of the oil pan meet. That is here the sealing furface is. If the thread of drain plug or oil pan is badly damaged. It is a good idea to replace them. How to stop oil drain plug leak after I replaced it with the factory plug%26amp;gasket but only slowed down the leak
Look for scratches or nicks on the sealing area,if the area looks damaged you can file it flat.Use a copper washer on the drain bolt to seal it easier.
Sealing the threads would just be bypassing the problem. The seal should be the flat spot where the bolt head meets the pan. It's either damaged or you're crossthreaded. If it's crossthreaded, the right thing to do is drill, tap and use the next size bolt.
It sounds like the threads are damaged in the crankcase. Double the gaskets and make sure they are tight and that you have not cross threaded the plug.
    ................ another washer .....................
You have to make sure you put the teflon tape on counterclockwise so that when you tighten the plug it stays in place. You only need maybe 6-8 wraps of the tape. If that doesn't do the job then you could try a thread chaser but more than not you will probably have to replace the pan! Sounds like someone cross threaded it some where along the line!
id say the threads are shot and its time for a new oil pan my friend
Make sure its your oil drain plug. Could be pan gasket and the leaks drip down to the plug so it just appears that the plug is leaking. Here is a great trick. Take a vaccuum cleaner with a hose attachment. Wrap a rag over the suction end and pull the drain plug. This will stop oil from leaking out of the car when replacing the drain plug.

Also, if you have had your oil changed at Jiffy Lube or something then chances are they will replace it for free.
